The Red Guitar

This is a picture of me when I was about 5 years old. There is a story behind this photo. The red guitar I am holding belonged to my 10 year old cousin who lived next door with my grandparents. He was very possessive of it and simply refused to let me use it. Knowing how much I longed to have it, my grandfather would let me play with it without my cousin’s knowledge while he was at school. He was not happy when he saw this photo and found out I had been using his beloved guitar. The secret was out!

  1. That is the cutest picture as well as the story. It was sweet of your grandfather to let you play with it. I wonder why your cousin was so possessive of the guitar? Did it have extra value or meaning to him over his other toys? I ask bacause with many children when they are possessive over objects they carry a deeper meaning. Than you have ones who just havent learned to share.

  2. Renata, today I asked my cousin where he got the guitar. He said our grandfather got it for him when he was returning from a trip. When we were growing up in Sri Lanka we didn't have many toys readily available to purchase. Fortunately for us, we had family who traveled or lived abroad who brought us toys. So, to answer your question as to why he didn't share, it might have been that it was special to him and the possibility of not being able to get another if his little cousin broke it!
